Trecchi CastleĀ is a historic castle located in Maleo, in the province of Lodi, Italy, originally built in the 15th century on the remnants of an older castle dating back to the 10th century. The structure is attributed to the Lombard architect Pellegrino Tibaldi. Over the years, the castle was transformed into an elegant country residence, showcasing architectural styles from various eras through numerous expansions, embellishments, and restorations. Historical Overview: The first recorded mention of the castle dates back to September 5, 991, in relation to a donation confirmed by Gualtero, a judge and envoy of Emperor Otto III. Throughout the centuries, the castle was frequently contested between Cremona and Milan. In the 16th century, it was completely rebuilt by the noble Teodoro Trivulzio. Later, in the late 17th century, it became the property of the Trecchi family, who retained ownership until the Napoleonic era. After changing hands several times, the castle was restored by Immobiliare Eleonora in the late 1990s and purchased by Immobiliare Novembre in 2023. Structure: The castle features a square block structure with two facades, one facing the park and the other the courtyard. The park-facing facade includes a large stone staircase and a balcony above a nymphaeum with a statue of a faun. Inside, the castle has multiple levels, including an underground floor with an icehouse, a grand ground floor, and a noble first floor. Significant rooms include a chapel with frescoes by Bernardino Campi and several richly decorated halls. Villa Trecchi: Opposite the castle is Villa Trecchi, a smaller residence built by a cadet branch of the Trecchi family in the early 18th century. The villa was later repurposed and suffered damage, eventually being restored and converted into a middle school by the municipality of Maleo.
